Why do People Stay at Jobs That They do Not Enjoy

You may have heard the old joke of the fellow who works for a circus but has a really terrible job. When asked why he stayed on and did not quit – his answer was that he liked “Show Business ” too much with all its excitement and challenges.
You do have a right in a North American society to do what you wish. However many people are stuck in jobs that they do not like or are below their capabilities for a number of reason. Chief of these if familiarity and lack of inertia.
Familiarity is a common theme. It is not even that the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.
It may be that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence – but who knows the problems you will have cutting it .
Its not only a fear of change – most people actually do not like change. There is a certain comfort level in what you know. It may not be good but at least you know what it is , what it does and what the problems are.
While it is true that there may be well be more potential on the other side – but yet a whole host of new and potentially worse problems. What you have may not be the best – but it can be counted on.
It is often other factors as well that influence a comfort level. Many years ago a young man had a summer project concerning a proposed social service program of a guaranteed minimum income. Perhaps such a system will come into play in the future. Such a program would allow for workers to continually leave the workforce for training and return with new and more desirable or needed skills and training. The interesting thing is that this young man conducting the questionaires realized a certain fact of the workforce that was readily apparent to him. It seemed that most people disliked and even hated their jobs. It was not even the money or the steady income that kept them at their places of employments.
Rather is was the “people at work” who they enjoyed as friends and social companions that kept them from quitting their jobs and moving on to new employment opportunities.
