One mistake in the interview and job interviewing process made often by inexperienced and even those interviewees with more experience in the workforce is to dwell to long or be to focused on the negative and negative information. There is as well often the temptation to over explain - its human nature. Avoid the tendency to explain or even point out negative factors and information. In addition do not explain or apologize for personal or negative shortcomings. To do so is to suggest to the employer in question that things were a greater issue or at least an issue to yourself than need be.

One interesting area of discussion or at least area of apparent controversy , or perhaps differing view is to handle the delicate situation or situations of why you left , are considering leaving your present employer . The question is often asked out of interest , or as perhaps a baldfaced test. Everyone likes someone positive. Negativity in a workforce spreads like one rotten apple in a barrel. Its obvious to anyone with any intelligence that you would not be in the interview room if you were 100 % happy with your present position or present employer. Yet if you answer the question with the truth it paints you and not the other party ( in this case your present employer) with the bad brush.

Human nature is often one of personal protectiveness . What may go on the thought processes of the interviewer is “If he talks about others in this way he will probably talk behind my back as well” followed by – cross that one off the list. A second case of this scenario is where the employer is like a hiring factory – treats employees as a commodity almost , and yet has great name recognition. You may well think that the viewpoint is that there are no shortage of foolish , even stupid consumers and customers to prey on the world and somehow there is an endless supply of these to enter into the business establishment of that firm.

View this all as a personal test. Remind yourself of what your grandmother probably told you “If you have nothing good to say don’t say it”. Never ever badmouth your employer , say nice things and good comments about the firm. “A good place to work” …..”I really enjoy working there”……” A good place to get valuable experience in the workforce / industry”. etc etc etc.

Interestingly you will come off much better with the interviewer as an employee and person of merit who would be a wise asset to their firm.
